Annie

Dad took Annie to the vet for me today ’cause neither of us could take off work after all the time we’ve taken off for fertility appointments.  I have next Friday off but I could tell she wasn’t feeling well and I didn’t want her to have to wait another week.

Annie is in kidney failure.  Our wonderful vet, Geana, has her hooked up to an IV for fluids and antibiotics.  There’s a chance that it’s a really bad infection and the fluids and meds will work and she’ll bounce back.  In the hopes that this is the case, Geana is keeping her over the weekend to get her well-hydrated.

The second scenario is that she’s been in a slow kidney decline that will continue.  Sometimes this can be temporaily reversed and health can be maintained with regular fluid infusions that can be done at home.  Geana says cats in this situation can have  a good quality of life if they get regular health care and it’s a manageable condition.  If the cat’s health starts to decline again, then quality of life can be reassesed at that time.

There’s also a possibility of a malignancy, maybe kidney cancer.  If she is worse on Monday, we have to decide if we want to do an ultrasound to see what her quality of life would be.  The lumps on her chest are just fatty deposits that we’re starting to notice because she has been slowly and gradually losing weight.

My sweet fuzzy baby.  I miss her so much.

I am so sorry. I lost my kitty Sophie to kidney disease – I hope that it is just an infection and she is all better on Monday.

Oh, poor baby! I really hope it is the first scenario, and she’ll be back in her sweet kitty form soon.

My husband is a vet so we’ve taken care of lots of pets in the same situation. Many of them improve and go on to lead healthy lives. We’ll be praying for your baby!!!

Oh I’m so sorry to hear that. Hopefully, it’s an infection that can be reversed!

I am so sorry to hear about your poor kitty. Just awful news. Hopefully things will fall into best case scenario and she’ll rebound.

I am so sorry and hoping Annie has a speedy recovery. I am in the process of switching our cats to wet food after reading about just how difficult dry kitty food can be on their little kidneys. I hope your little girl quickly becomes her old self again.

Not what you need right now (not what you ever need but particularly not now), I hope it clears up.

Thanks so much, everybody! It’s been a hard couple of days. Things are looking a little more hopeful. I’ll post about it shortly. I miss Annie’s sweet face and I hope she’ll be home soon!

Keri, as I’ve read up on Annie’s condition I’ve learned a lot about how to prevent this from happening to our other kitties, and a soft food diet seems to be the way to go!
