It’s Alright

Today’s ultrasound appointment went great!  What a relief!  First they did a non-stress test.  I relaxed in a huge, soft recliner while they strapped two large monitors to me.  One went around my upper stomach and measured contractions of the uterus and movements of the baby.  The lower one monitored the baby’s heart rate.  Apparently the purpose of this test is to see if movement causes the baby any distress.  We passed the test with flying colors!

Next they did the ultrasound.  We got to see the baby “practice breathing.”  They measured the baby’s size, the amount of amniotic fluid, the blood pressure in the umbilical cord, and checked out all the major organs.  Everything looks great!  The baby is 4 lbs, 2 oz, right in the middle of the range of size for it’s age (31 weeks, 1 day).

Such a relief to have all that check out A-OK.  Next appointment with the OB is on the 27th.

I forgot to tell everyone – Dad’s sweet kitty Poppy has found her new home!  I ended up contacting her breeder in Houston, Susan.  Susan is actually no longer breeding, but she is actively involved in Abyssinian rescue.  Poppy isn’t actually a rescue, but I knew Susan would have the resources to find her just the right home.  And her standards are so strict, I knew if a family passed her standards, they would be the perfect home!  I am so attached to her, I just couldn’t think clearly about a new home for her.

My hope was that we would find a family in Austin, or at least in Texas, where I could visit Poppy occasionally.  Unfortunately, the perfect home for Poppy turned out to be in Florida.  They’re a wonderful couple who had an Abby previously until she died of kidney failure at 16 years old.  They’ve been looking for just the right Abby for the past two years, and Poppy just won them over!  They didn’t even see pictures of her, they just read about her and went through the interview process with Susan. Fortunately a friend of theirs has a son in Austin who was driving to Florida to spend the holidays with his folks, and he and his fiancee were so sweet to drive Poppy to her new home.  I couldn’t take her to meet them the day they left.  I just cried and cried.  My mom happened to be staying in town with my brother, and she took Poppy to meet her ride.  Mom (and Poppy) just fell in love with the couple, and they adored Poppy!  They were sad to hand her off to her new family, they enjoyed her so much!

Her new mom, Catherine, has been sending me updates and pictures.  Happily, Poppy is as spoiled and adored as I had hoped she would be!  Catherine says Poppy is especially attached to her husband.  What a flirt!  He is retired, so they get to spend all day together.  Catherine works part time, but they have lots of time and love to give Poppy.  She’s their only child, so she is wonderfully spoiled!  Susan did a great job of finding the perfect match between kitty and family.  I still miss her every day, and I still feel so sad that she wasn’t happy here with us.  But I couldn’t have hoped for a better home for our sweet girl!

Poppy does look so happy! She was getting so depressed with competing with our animals for attention. It’s so good to see her back to her happy, perky self!
